Australia Day Community Breakfast and Family Fun Day

Australia Day 2018 will be celebrated in Broome with a bigger, better community breakfast and family fun day at Town Beach.

The alcohol-free event happens on Friday 26 January from 8am to 1pm and includes a community breakfast, live music, children’s activities, an Australian Citizenship Ceremony featuring almost 30 Broome people from 10 different countries, and presentation of the Community Citizen of the Year Awards.

Broome’s hardworking Lions, Lioness and Rotary Clubs, Roebuck Lodge and Men’s Shed will again host the event, cooking and serving breakfast from 8am to 10am, while from 10am to 1pm food vans will sell cool drinks, ice creams and more.

The Shire of Broome has come on board with sponsorship and support, with entertainment to include a line-up of local musicians featuring Scott McDougall, Maddi Davies and Friends, Paul Boon and George Bishop, and Dan Guidera; children’s bouncy castle, water slide and battle balls; and the traditional favourite thong-throwing competition.

The Shire of Broome will also host Australia Day Ambassador Clinton Heal, who was 2011 WA Young Australian of the Year and founded MelanomaWA after being diagnosed with the disease at the age of just 22.

There will be no evening fireworks event this year after previous cancellations due to bad weather.

Broome Shire President, Harold Tracey, said Australia Day was an opportunity for the community to come together in celebration, to welcome some new Australian citizens to Broome and to recognise those who contribute to our community.

“This year the Shire of Broome is throwing its support and funding behind our community service clubs to make the morning’s event at Town Beach bigger and better,” Cr Tracey said.

“Council decided against running a fireworks event this year, primarily due to the uncertainty of Broome’s weather at this time of year and the possibility of having to cancel at short notice as happened in 2017.”

To facilitate the event, the Town Beach boat ramp will be closed from 6pm Thursday 25 January to 2pm Friday 26 January. The Town Beach car park will be closed from 6.30am to 2pm on Friday 26 January, with traffic controls in place on Robinson St.
