Australia Day Community Breakfast

Australia Day 2019 will be celebrated in Broome with the annual community breakfast at Town Beach.

Broome’s hardworking Lions, Lioness, and Rotary Clubs, and Roebuck Lodge will again host the event from 8am to 10am on Saturday 26 January, cooking and selling breakfast for $2.

The Shire of Broome is providing sponsorship and support for the event that will also include live music, children’s activities, an Australian Citizenship Ceremony featuring 20 Broome people from 12 different countries, presentation of the Community Citizen of the Year Awards, and an address by Australia Day Ambassador, Dr Robert Isaacs AM.

Dr Isaacs is an Aboriginal Elder from the Whadjuk- Bibbilmum Wardandi Noongar language group who has devoted his career to breaking down cultural barriers and improving the lives of disadvantaged people.

His service to the community has been recognised with honours including the Order of Australia medal twice, Centenary Medal of Honour, an honorary doctorate for his contribution to Aboriginal Affairs, and the 2015 WA Australian of the Year.

Broome Shire President, Harold Tracey, said Australia Day was an opportunity for the community to come together in celebration, to welcome new Australian citizens and to recognise those who contribute to our community.

“Broome’s community service clubs have been putting on an Australia Day breakfast for the community for more than 25 years now, and we’re pleased to be able to support them in their efforts and would encourage everyone to come along to Town Beach to kick off the day,” Cr Tracey said.

Once again there will be no evening fireworks event this year after previous cancellations due to bad weather.
