Beach 2 Bay Virtual Swim 2019

Have you ever wondered how far it would be to swim from Broome’s beautiful Cable Beach, around Gantheaume Point, to Town Beach in Roebuck Bay?

Well, the answer is 20km, and that’s the distance of the second Beach 2 Bay Virtual Swim coming to Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre on Sunday 31 March.

Shire of Broome Manager Sport and Recreation, Casey Zepnick, said the event would be held entirely in the BRAC swimming pool and was designed to replicate the distance to swim from Cable Beach to Roebuck Bay but without the logistical and safety challenges.

“The Beach 2 Bay Virtual Swim is aimed at swimmers of all abilities, with categories for solo swimmers, duos, teams of four, or novelty teams of up to 10 members for those just starting out,” Mr Zepnick said.

“BRAC has previously hosted the Virtual Rottnest Channel Swim but we felt that Broome deserved its own event, and that the concept of swimming the distance from Cable Beach to Roebuck Bay was a more relevant challenge for local people.

“In last year’s inaugural event, 60 participants of all ages took part in the challenge, and this year, the team at BRAC is looking forward to an even bigger and better event.”

For anyone wanting to get some training beforehand, BRAC offers an Adult Swim Program on Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 7pm, and Thursday mornings from 5.45am to 7am with a coach to offer training and stroke correction.

The Beach 2 Bay Virtual Swim event briefing is at 7.15am on Sunday 31 March before swimmers hit the water at 7.30am, with supporters and spectators welcome.

Registrations open Monday 18 February with forms available at the link below, from BRAC on 9191 8720 or, or Broome Sportspower stores.
