Broome preparing for plastic bag ban

Released 21 February 2018

The Shire of Broome is encouraging local business and the community to prepare for the State-wide plastic bag ban to come into effect from 1 July.

Council supports the introduction of a ban on single-use plastic bags to help protect the natural environment of Broome.

The Shire wrote to local retailers at the end of 2017 encouraging them to phase out the use of the bags as soon as possible, saying: “There is widespread evidence that the use of the bags has a detrimental effect on the environment, impacting on local flora and fauna including marine life.”

To support this, the Shire is making available to the community free multiple-use shopping bags and these can be collected from the Shire Administration, with a limit of two per person.

The WA Government will host an information session on Monday, 26 February, at Lotteries House from 6pm to 7.30pm with registration required to or 0412 770 193.
