Broome sport keeps growing thanks to volunteers

Released 5 April 2018

Participation in club sport in Broome has increased by 10 per cent since 2015 and 20 per cent since 2009, according to the Shire of Broome Club Survey Report.

The report found there were now nine clubs with a membership of more than 300 people, up from five in 2015, and an estimated 5979 people involved in local clubs. Youth membership has increased by 61 per cent since 2009.

The data was collated from the 43 clubs that completed the survey, with committee members asked a variety of questions related to the running of their clubs, ranging from participation trends to club challenges, and how much time was spent on planning and policy development.

The aim of the survey was to determine how the Club Development Officer (CDO) program can best assist Broome’s clubs, and Shire of Broome CDO, Mike Doyle, said the results highlighted the significant impact local sporting clubs had in our community.

“The information we received indicates there were 87 major sporting events organised by our local volunteers during 2017,” Mr Doyle said.

“That’s an estimated 14,265 people involved at an average of 163 per event. This is a significant contribution to our community from a small group of people, particularly given these stats don’t include the regular weekly sport that is organised.”

Two Club Survey Reports have been conducted since September 2009, and Mr Doyle said the challenges clubs faced remained consistent.

“Undoubtedly the biggest challenge facing local clubs is the recruitment and retention of volunteers,” Mr Doyle said.

“While these results show we have a very healthy sporting community, the people who run our clubs need to be supported.

“If you are a parent or someone with some spare time, being part of a local sporting club is a very rewarding experience.”
