Late night trading is coming to Chinatown for one Friday each month until the end of the year as part of a trial supported by Chinatown traders.

The trial will start on Friday 25 August and then continue monthly, finishing on 8 December 2017. There is scope to extend and expand into 2018 if enough interest is shown from traders and the community.

So far almost 30 Chinatown retailers across a wide range of categories have put their hands up to keep their doors open until at least 8:00pm.

The Chinatown Revitalisation Project will support these participating businesses with promotions and event materials, as well as coordinate activities to increase the vibrancy in town including street performers, live music and lighting displays to create ‘hubs of activity’ around participating businesses.

Chinatown Investment and Development Coordinator, Jeremy Macmath, said that late night trading was a successful tool for helping revitalise town centres.

“It will create a vibrant night event in Chinatown that aims to bring tourists and locals back into town during the cooler evening and into the shoulder season, as well as improving business relationships and confidence amongst traders,” he said.

Business owner and Chinatown Reference Group member, Julie Russell, is supporting the late night trading trial and urged the community to get behind it.

“Late night shopping is something we hope the Broome community can get behind, as it’s a great way to support local business, see the town buzzing at night and perhaps pick up a treat for someone special!” she said.

An enthusiastic group of Chinatown traders attended a workshop on the late-night trading trial hosted by Mr Macmath in July.

The workshop outlined the components required for successful late night trading, gave case studies where late night trading had played a role in revitalising a town centre, and discussed the benefits, barriers and solutions to late night trading in Chinatown, and what days and frequencies would suit.
