Dampier Memorial marks 80 years

Released 30 October 2018

Tuesday 30 October 2018 marks the 80th anniversary of the unveiling of the Capt. William Dampier Memorial in Broome's Bedford Park.

The memorial is carved from a single piece of granite and after travelling more than 7000km by sea from Melbourne it was unveiled at a ceremony in Broome with full naval honours on 30 October 1938.

The memorial depicts a sea chest and commemorates navigator, writer and naturalist, Capt. William Dampier, who first visited the area around Broome in 1699 aboard the HMS Roebuck.

The memorial underwent restoration work in 2015.
