More than $530,000 will be invested in Broome events, tourism and economic development projects in the coming year through Shire of Broome grant funding and support.

The Shire will partner with 15 Broome organisations on a range of exciting projects through the new Economic, Events and Tourism Development Funding grants program and Tourism Administration Policy Funding grants program.

Applications for the annual grants were open between January and March this year and received considerable interest from a broad range of organisations and events, with the selection process proving highly competitive.

Broome Shire President, Harold Tracey, said Council was committed to developing Broome’s economy, and the events and initiatives receiving support would provide a significant boost to the town.

“Events play an important role in the life of our town and we’re pleased to be able to support the organisations that put in the hard work to make them happen,” Cr Tracey said.

“Additionally, we’re continuing to provide funding to the Broome Visitor Centre and Australia’s North West Tourism to continue their important work in marketing our town and region and looking after the many visitors who come here.

“By partnering with these local groups and organisations on a wide range of events and initiatives the Shire of Broome is helping them to build our community and our economy.”

In 2018 the Shire’s grant funding programs were expanded to include the new Economic, Events and Tourism Development Funding program in addition to the ongoing Community Sponsorship Funding program, with the recipients of the latter funding stream to be announced this month.

“This new format has made more funding available to a wider range of applicants and will in turn bring greater benefits to our community,” Cr Tracey said.
