New Broome youth bike park getting closer

Released 23 March 2018

The creation of a new Youth Bike Precinct at Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre is another step closer with significant funding now secured and detailed planning nearing completion.

The BRAC 1 Youth Bike Precinct project is earmarked for vacant land off Frederick St between BRAC and the Boulevard Shopping Centre.

The Shire of Broome has allocated $85,000 to the project this year, with a further $85,000 in grant funding secured from the WA Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.

The Shire of Broome is also now seeking corporate and community supporters to help get the project up and running by providing in-kind contributions or funding towards earthworks, plant and equipment hire, clean fill and forming of jumps and other features.

The master plan for the site was developed in 2017 after extensive community consultation and includes a mountain bike ‘pump track’, mountain bike and walking trails, an informal dirt jumps area, BMX track, shade, seating and drinking water.

The project will be rolled out in stages as funding becomes available, with construction of the bike pump track planned for completion this financial year.

Broome Shire President, Harold Tracey, said the BRAC 1 Youth Bike Precinct was an important project that would provide new opportunities for youth in Broome.

“As a Council we want to provide activities for our young people that promote physical activity and healthy living,” Cr Tracey said.

“During consultation there was also interest from community members keen to be involved with construction of the new facility, and so the Shire has developed sponsorship packages and is very keen to hear from corporate or community groups who share our desire to get this facility up and running.”
