Fencing Information and Resources

To further assist in understanding Residential fencing requirements, we have produced a general information handout regarding Fencing in Residential Areas.

The Department of Housing and Works answers more than 600 telephone calls each month on dividing fence issues. This number has been constant for some time and reflects a significant need within the community for clear information and advice about people's legal rights and responsibilities in relation to dividing fences.

The booklet Dividing Fences - Rights and Responsibilities is the Department's response to that demonstrated need. In clear and simple language, it explains the rights and responsibilities of property owners and occupiers under the Dividing Fences Act 1961. Note that this is an external link.
