Community Services

Community Services

The Community Services Department includes the key functions of community planning and development, , arts and cultural development including the development of the Broome Arts Centre, and sponsoring community projects such as HYPE, Kimberley Family Day Care Scheme and the Kimberley Inclusion Team.

The Department offers number of programs designed to improve access to social services and is dedicated to the delivery of services in the Shire.

Disability Services

As members of the community, people with disabilities and their families and carers have the same rights as other people to access Local Government services. These rights are built into State and Commonwealth legislation which make it unlawful to discriminate against a person with a disability.

The Shire and its Disability Advisory Commitee are responsible for the development and maintenance of a Disability Access and Inclusion Plan(DAIP) which ensures physical access to Local Government facilities and amenities and developing disability specific services to assist in overcoming barriers to community participation to people with disabilities.

The Shire of Broome is committed to ensuring those members of the community with a disability have access to essential services and are included in all aspects of daily life. For further information on the Shire of Broome DAIP and The Disability Services Planning Committee, please contact the Shire on 91 913 456.

Youth Services

The Shire facilitates Youth Services in Broome by hosting and providing representation at monthly Broome Youth Coordinating Network (BYCN) meetings at which information on the programs, services and future activities of the various youth agencies and stakeholders is presented.

An outcome from the BCYN and HYPE project has been the development of the Youth Events Group, which plans specific programmes and youth events. This approach to youth services allows for broad stakeholder involvement and community ownership in youth affairs. For further information, please contact the Shire on 91 913 456.

Helping Young People Engage (HYPE)

The Shire of Broome auspice the Helping Young People Engage (HYPE) project was developed in 2003 after overwhelming community concern over antisocial and offending behaviours in areas were young people were gathering. A combined taskforce of the Shire of Broome, the WA Police, the Department of Community Services and the Department of Corrective Services head a management committee that oversee 10-15 youth workers who patrol the ‘trouble-spots’ of Broome by foot, typically on a Friday and Saturday night to address issues relating to young people and public spaces.
