Youth Services

The Shire facilitates Youth Services in Broome by hosting and providing representation at monthly Broome Youth Coordinating Network (BYCN) meetings at which information on the programs, services and future activities of the various youth agencies and stakeholders is presented.

An outcome from the BCYN and HYPE project has been the development of the Youth Events Group, which plans specific programmes and youth events. This approach to youth services allows for broad stakeholder involvement and community ownership in youth affairs. For further information, please contact the Shire on 91 913 456.

Helping Young People Engage (HYPE)

The Helping Young People Engage (HYPE) project was developed in 2003 in response to community concern about antisocial behaviours in areas where young people were congregating in large numbers. The HYPE project was administered by the Shire of Broome for the first seven years of its lifespan, with the administering of the project transitioning to Save the Children in late 2011.

The project is managed jointly by Save the Children, the Shire of Broome, the Broome Police, the Department for Child Protection and the Department of Corrective Services (Juvenile Justice).

HYPE employs a pool of Youth Liaison Workers who patrol the streets of Broome in a vehicle every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. Youth Liaison Workers engage with young people, encourage them to stay safe, to be aware of the consequences of their actions and to make positive choices, and to provide young people with transportation to safer places. HYPE is widely credited with reducing the numbers of young people congregating in large groups on the streets of Broome.

For further details on HYPE, please contact Save the Children's HYPE Coordinator Polly Banks on (08) 9192 8715 during office hours.
