The Shire of Broome recognises that sport and recreation plays a significant role in the health of a community. Sport and recreation facilities and services provided by the Shire are intended to assist the needs of individuals, families and organisations in order to encourage and support a healthy and active Broome community.

Club Association and Community Liason

The Shire’s Community Services Directorate supports sport and recreation organisations by providing services in various areas including:

• club/association management information and advice
• professional development opportunities for committee members and club personnel
• information about available grant funding processes and assistance with the reviewing of applications
• support for the existence and sustainability of different types of sports and recreational activities

Facility Development

The development of Broome's sport and recreational facilities has occurred to assist the needs and interests of the community. Based on community demand, sport and recreational organisations are encouraged to approach the Shire to discuss applications for new facilities and/or improvements to existing facilities. A major facility development project initiated by the Shire is the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre (BRAC) with the enlargement of the facility being undertaken in partnership with the financial support of the WA Department of Sport and Recreation. Completion of Stage Two of the Shire's BRAC facility will include two new outdoor sporting fields with one of the fields having lighting for night-time events.

Events Support

The Shire's Community Services Directorate liaises with event organisers and other directorates within the Shire's administration to support the organisation and promotion of community events such as Broome's North West Expo, Shinju Matsuri Festival, Worn Art Exhibition and various sporting tournaments.

Grants and Funding Facilitation

The Community Services Directorate assists sporting organisations in locating appropriate grants. The Shire also facilitates the funding allocation process by providing information on funding and reviewing of submissions.
