Dogs & Caravan Parks
All caravan parks and camping grounds within Western Australia have to comply with the Caravan Parks and Camping Grounds Act 1995 and Caravan Parks and Camping Grounds Regulations 1997. The Shire of Broome understands your frustration that some facilities within the Shire town boundary do not accept animals/dogs. There are facilities outside the town boundary that do accept dogs.
The legislation does not state that animals (expect guide or hearing dogs) have to be accepted, it is up to the facility operator to accept animals. If animals are accepted there are requirements that have to be complied with, including:
1. At all times dogs have to be either:
- On a lease under the control of a responsible person.
- Within a caravan (private owned ones with owners permission, not onsite vans or park homes).
- Within a suitable fenced or enclosed area for that dog.
3. No animal is allowed into an on-site caravan or park home.
The Shire of Broome can not make any facility operators accept animals and there is no policy stating that animals/dogs are not allowed in caravan parks, it is up to the caravan park operator to decide if their park will accept animals or not. Further to this the Shire of Broome does not operate any caravan park and nor are there are any showgrounds or other parklands that that Shire of Broome can use as a caravan park or camping ground facility.
At the 2008 Caravan Park Tourist Season Meeting the following caravan parks stated that they will accept animals:
- Barn Hill Station Stay
- Broome PCYC (this is an overflow facility)
- Broome Pistol Club (this is an overflow facility)
- Broome Speedway Club (this is an overflow facility)
- Port Smith Caravan Park
