Overview

The Shire of Broome adopted its 2023/24 Budget at its Ordinary Meeting of Council on 11 July 2023. The following differential rates and minimum payments were adopted by Council for 2023/24.

Rates notices will be issued to property owners on 18 July with a due date for payment of 24 August 2023. Ratepayers have the option of paying in full or paying in two or four instalments on the following due dates:

Single Instalment:

Full payment due date – 24/08/2023

Two Instalments option:

1st instalment due date – 24/08/2023

2nd instalment due date – 04/01/2024

Four Instalments option:

1st instalment due date – 24/08/2023

2nd instalment due date – 26/10/2023

3rd instalment due date – 04/01/2024

4th instalment due date – 07/03/2024

The Shire of Broome is offering Early Rates Incentive Prizes for eligible entrants who pay their rates in full before or on the due date. Terms and conditions on how to enter can be found at the bottom of this page in Related Information.

How are rates calculated?

The Valuer Generals Office will provide Council with the Gross Rental Value (GRV) or Unimproved Value (UV) for each rateable property and mining tenements located within the Shire. For vacant land, where no rental value can be determined, the GRV is calculated on the basis of 3% of its capital (or resale value), for residential properties and 5% for commercial and industrial properties.

Council determines the amount of rates required in to deliver various services each financial year. The required rates are then shared by all rateable properties in the Shire based on valuations provided by the Valuer Generals Office. Council sets the Rate-in-the-Dollar (RID) and minimum payment for each rating category.

Annual rates are calculated by multiplying the property's GRV or UV by the RID.

Example 1: 
If the property's GRV is $20,000 and the RID is $0.15 cents and the minimum payment is $1220, then the rates payable will be calculated as follows:

$20,000 x $0.15 = $3000.
Given that this amount is over the minimum payment, the amount payable is: $3000.

Example 2: 
If the property's GRV is $5,000 and the RID is $0.15 cents and the minimum payment is $1200, then the rates payable will be calculated as follows:

$5,000 x $0.15 = $750.
Given that this amount is under the minimum payment, the amount payable is: $1220.
