The Shire of Broome has provided the opportunity for community groups to utilise storage units at Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre (BRAC), at a minimal cost.

In 2015 the Shire was successful in receiving Lotterywest funding to construct a community storage facility at Reserve 42502 at BRAC, with the completion of the project occurring in April 2017.

With the current storage unit agreements expiring on 30 June 2022, the Shire advertised Expressions of Interest for the 16 storage units.

At the May 2022 Council Meeting, 15 not-for-profit community organisations were granted the opportunity to enter into a storage unit agreement.

The recipients include arts and culture organisations, animal welfare groups, sporting clubs and not-for-profits.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said it was important to help local community groups where possible, so they can thrive and grow.

“Broome has some amazing not-for-profit organisations, who play a key role in the social fabric of our town and are worthy recipients of financial assistance,” he said.

“This Shire initiative supports a wide range of organisations that provide so much back for the Broome community.

“It is unfortunate we cannot give every not-for-profit organisation this opportunity, although we always try our best to accommodate everyone, where possible.

“I’d also like to thank Lotterywest again for the funding that made this project come to fruition.”
