The Shire of Broome has provided a helping hand to local not-for-profit organisations, with over $50,000 distributed as part of the COVID-19 Community Support Grants Program.

With the local economy impacted significantly due to COVID-19 and associated restrictions, the Broome Shire Council adopted a Community Support Package back in April.

The package included 16 initiatives to benefit Broome either financially or socially, including a funding opportunity for local community organisations.

A total of $50,225 has been allocated to charities, not-for-profits, sporting clubs and community service providers - $10,000 of which was contributed by EDL Energy.

One of the successful applicants was Broome Lotteries House (BLH), who will use their $5000 grant to organise the Broome Chilli Festival in September.

BLH manager Kylie Brockenshire said the organisation was grateful to receive the grant.

“We are a not-for-profit organisation and don’t get funding assistance from other sources,” she said.

“We weren’t going to have the Chilli Festival this year due to COVID-19 but everything started to relax and the community were keen for it to happen again.

“This Shire grant has given us the ability to purchase prizes and run the event.”

Shire of Broome deputy president Desiree Male said it was important to help local not-for-profit organisations.

“Broome’s community and sporting organisations are the lifeblood of our town and many have faced a tough time due to COVID-19,” she said.

“Our Community Support Package has provided them with the opportunity to apply for funding, which will now be put towards community services, events and innovative program delivery over the next 12 months.

“The Shire is delighted to provide a helping hand, with the Community Support Package benefitting residents, businesses and our town as a whole.”
