Local youngsters are set for an education boost in the near future, with the Shire of Broome receiving two new grants to facilitate additional programs at the Broome Public Library.

An Inspiring WA grant will provide funding for the library to host an event during National Science Week, which will take place in August.

This event will bring presenter Jameson Harvey from Red Dirt Robotics to run five coding and robotics sessions at the library.

Four of the workshops will target students, while one will be for adults in the community.

The library currently collaborates with the Broome Scratchers Coding and Robotics Club - it is hoped that these exciting workshops run by Red Dirt Robotics will inspire more community members to participate in the club.

The Shire has also been successful in applying for a grant through Horizon Power's Community Partnerships Program.

This grant will fund the purchase of new laptops for the Broome Scratchers Coding and Robotics Club, for their sessions held at the library every Thursday.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said he wanted to thank Scitech, the State Government and Horizon Power for awarding the library this important funding.

“The library is so well used by our community and offers a wide range of programs and events for local residents – and in particular Broome children and teenagers,” he said.

“It is terrific that through these grants we can expand the great work that our library staff are already undertaking.

“Engaging the Broome community on local science instils an appreciation for the role of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in our daily lives.

“It is important the next generation put a focus on learning STEM disciplines and the Broome Public Library is the perfect place to do so.”
