The Shire of Broome is progressing with long-awaited plans for a new boating facility, with a consultation period with the community to begin today.

The Broome Boating Facility project has been in the pipeline for many years and is considered essential in ensuring the safety of residents and tourists taking to local waters.

With a concept design in place, the project proposes the construction of a small boating facility at Entrance Point with four ramp lanes and up to two finger jetties.

No capital dredging is anticipated as part of construction works, while the facility would be accompanied by approximately 160 parking bays.

The Shire of Broome is asking residents to have their say on the proposal with a community survey open from March 18 to April 16.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said he was delighted the project was progressing and said Council opening the process up for public comment was a significant milestone.

“The Broome Boating Facility is something I am personally very passionate about delivering and I am very happy that the Shire is moving towards making this a reality,” he said.

“The Shire has been proactive in addressing the fact that Broome needs safer boat-launching facilities and has worked tirelessly with relevant stakeholders to get the project to this point.

“I’d like to acknowledge the sheer amount of work that all stakeholders in this project have put in – Broome has been waiting for new boating facilities for decades and we have now reached a landmark moment.

“This is a once in a generation project that will revolutionise the way Broome boaties take to the water.

“Broome’s amazing coastline is one of the town’s major drawcards and I am sure I’ll be joined by countless other community members in making use of the boating facility once it is completed.”

Following review of the community survey and comments received, the concept may be refined prior to final design and completion of a Business Case for the project.

The Business Case is intended to be used to lobby for funding to construct the facility.
