Lifeguard patrols on Cable Beach have concluded for another year, with a busy 2020 season concluding last week.

The usual service commenced later than usual this year due to COVID-19 and associated travel restrictions, but Surf Life Saving WA lifeguards ran patrols from July 13 until November 8.

A decision was made to extend the season by an additional two weeks due to continued high beach attendance beyond the usual end of October finish.

A collaboration with Broome Surf Life Saving Club volunteers worked well again in 2020 to keep local residents and tourists safe on the world-famous beach.

In 2020, lifeguards carried out four rescues and there were four major first-aid interventions needed, with 31 minor first aid incidents and 3873 preventative actions undertaken.

Cable Beach was also attended by an average of 1480 people on a daily basis, with lifeguards patrolling for 99 days.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey thanked the lifeguards for their professionalism and commitment in 2020.

“Despite travel restrictions being enforced this year, Cable Beach has been very busy and it has taken a significant amount of patrol hours to ensure the safety of attendees,” he said.

“Our lifeguards have done a great job and I thank them for their diligence.

“Moving forward, Cable Beach will be unsupervised during the wet season and as such swimmers are asked to exercise caution.

“Please be aware of stingers, take heed of warnings, do not swim alone and respect the ocean.”
