Over recent years the Shire has focused on revitalising both Town Beach and Chinatown – with these substantial upgrades creating community-focused, enlivened spaces in Broome.

However, instead of these precincts standing as silos, it is important that we connect them through accessible pathways, walking trails and transport options.

If you have been driving along Hamersley Street towards Town Beach recently you will have noticed construction work being undertaken along the Roebuck Bay foreshore.

This project, called the Conti Foreshore Shared Path, has been jointly funded by the Shire and State Government – and is almost complete.

Not only are the views over Roebuck Bay spectacular, but this area in Broome is rich in history and heritage.

The Jetty to Jetty Trail, created by the Shire in partnership with Nyamba Buru Yawuru, starts at Streeter’s Jetty and ends at Town Beach.

Along this trail there is interpretive signage, public art and now once the Shared Path is completed, a pathway that people of all abilities can enjoy.

This part of Broome will now become a fantastic place to go for a walk or run, but there is much to discover also.

For example, did you know that the Women in Pearling Statue on the foreshore at Hamersley Street was unveiled in 2010 as a dedication to the women who contributed to Broome’s pearling history?

It was here that mothers, wives and children of the lugger crews watched for the return of their loved ones on the spring tide and then waved them off to sea with a prayer on the neap tide.

The Women in Pearling Statue is just one attraction of the Jetty to Jetty Trail – which the Shire is celebrating at a special event next month.

The Rediscover Jetty to Jetty event will be held on July 2 to celebrate the completion of the Conti Foreshore Shared Path and the recent opening of the reconstructed Streeter’s Jetty.

I hope that you will join us on the day to celebrate this special part of Broome – there will be a walking tour led by Bart Pigram, kids’ activities, live music and much more.
