Recent dog attacks prompt call for owners to secure their pets
Published on 15 October 2024
Shire Rangers have received a number of reports of dog attacks in Broome this month, highlighting the need for pet owners to take responsibility for their animals.
The best safeguard to prevent your dog from attacking another animal or person from being attacked is to ensure your property boundaries are secure.
The most common scenario in which dogs are involved in a vicious attack involves at least one dog that has escaped from its owner’s property.
Shire Rangers are also calling for people to ensure their dogs remain on lead in public, including in off-lead areas, if they cannot recall them in any situation.
Some of the recent attacks have sadly led to people and/or other dogs sustaining injuries. That said, it is important to note that the definition of a dog attack includes charging towards a person or animal—other people have no way of knowing that your dog is just being playful.
Most dog owners are doing the right thing by registering and microchipping their pets, and ensuring secure property boundaries.
However, to avoid unsavoury dog-related instances in Broome, all pet owners need to be mindful of their responsibilities.
