The Shire of Broome has installed additional street lighting along Frederick Street, between the Cable Beach Road East roundabout to Herbert Street.

The intent of this project is to improve street lighting in this area around the Boulevard Shopping Centre and increase spill lighting to the adjacent footpaths.

The project involved the installation of 40 x 160w LED luminaires and the upgrade of 11 poles to double lighting.

This improves surveillance and the level of lighting to be sufficient to recognise human faces, which will assist in targeting anti-social related behaviour in the area.

At last year’s Community Safety Forum, security and lighting around the Boulevard Shopping Centre was raised as a concern and this project is the start of a solution to this issue.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said investment in community safety was a priority.

“This project reiterates the Shire’s commitment to community safety and improvement of our infrastructure to address issues relating to anti-social behaviour in public places,” he said.

“Frederick Street is a high-traffic area that includes the Boulevard Shopping Centre and a mix of businesses and residences, which makes it a target for anti-social related behaviour.

“Community safety is of upmost priority to the Shire and the installation of additional street lighting in this high-traffic area is a step in the right direction to increase the security of this area.”
