The Shire of Broome’s Community Safety and Rangers team will be hosting a Community Action Day this coming weekend, where local dog owners can bring their pets along to receive a host of free services and treats.

This event, which is being held in collaboration with the RSPCA, SAFE Broome and local welfare agencies, will be focused on best-practice care for your furry friend.

Free microchipping and pro-rata registration will be offered for your dog on the day, as well as freebies, free dog food and giveaways.

The RSPCA and Shire will be assisting with advice on pet behavioural training and the promotion of pet sterilisation.

This collaboration between the Shire, RSPCA and SAFE is consistent with the Shire’s Corporate Business Plan objective to encourage responsible animal management and to partner with volunteer animal welfare groups.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said Broome was a pet-friendly community and this free event should be taken advantage of by all pet owners in the Shire.

“Dogs are our best mates – but it is really important that we look after them properly and treat them well,” he said.

“The Shire is delighted to be able to offer free dog registration and microchipping at this event, which I hope local residents take advantage of.

“Registration and microchipping allow the Shire to identify stray pets and return them direct to their owners without sending them to the pound.

“This year alone our Rangers have impounded 72 unregistered and non-microchipped dogs, showing the need for pet owners to do the right thing.

“Being able to join forces with agencies like SAFE Broome and RSPCA is invaluable - they do an amazing job for our town.

“I’d encourage all local dog owners to bring their furry friends down to the event and meet the team.”

The Community Action Day will take place at the Courthouse Markets on Saturday, June 18 from 8am – 1pm. Dogs must be on a leash.
