The Shire of Broome Council has approved a COVID-19 community support package, with new measures put in place to help residents and businesses during the ongoing pandemic.

To be rolled out in stages, the first instalment includes a raft of measures to help financially and socially.

This includes the freezing of rates, fees and charges for 2020-21, rent relief for businesses that occupy Shire-run premises and a community support grants program.

These carefully considered measures have been endorsed to avoid further financial strain to homeowners, businesses and residents.

The support package also includes the provision of social initiatives to enhance community spirit during these uncertain times.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said he was delighted the Council had adopted the new community support package at a Special Council Meeting on Thursday.

“This virus is more than a risk to our health - it threatens to wreak havoc on our prosperity and wellbeing too,” he said.

“Given the prospect of this pandemic continuing for months to come, the Shire of Broome is acutely aware that members of our community are doing it tough.

“Placing no additional burden on ratepayers is the right thing to do in these financially turbulent times.

“The financial side of the measures mean the Shire is potentially forgoing hundreds of thousands of dollars of income over the next six months.

“From a social perspective, the Shire is committed to offering as many services as possible – just in a different way.

“Please adhere to social distancing regulations this Easter and stay safe – we will get through this, and come out the other side stronger, as a community.”
