The Shire of Broome will be hosting a Community Safety Forum next month as part of the engagement process seeking feedback on the Draft Community Safety Plan 2021 – 2025.

The plan has been developed following the results of the Shire’s Community Perceptions Survey - with public safety the number one issue highlighted by respondents. Feedback received at the forum will be used to shape the final document.

A number of State Government Ministers will be invited to attend, which will provide a further opportunity for the community’s voice to be heard.

At last year’s Annual Elector’s Meeting in December 2019, community angst was identified and a motion was passed to hold a Community Forum, attended by State Government Ministers, to ad- dress public safety in Broome.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey, who will chair the meeting, said the Shire is committed to getting the relevant agencies in the room and letting residents have their say.

“It is critical that the community’s concerns are heard directly by the agencies best placed to drive solutions and change,” he said.

“Equally, these agencies will have an opportunity to respond with updates on work currently being done.”

Cr Tracey acknowledged there had been significant community interest in the subject of public safety and other attempts to arrange a similar event

“I know there is a lot of angst, high emotion and sensitivities regarding this subject and the Shire wants to assist in coordinating a unified approach to finding a solution,” he added.

“It is critical that community concerns are heard, and action is pursued in a cohesive manner.”

The Community Safety Forum will be held at the Broome Civic Centre on December 7 from 6pm – 9pm, and will align with the relevant COVID-19 restrictions for public events.

Pre-registration is requested to assist in preparing the venue and can be completed by clicking here.
