The Shire of Broome is delighted that the State Government has taken on advice from local governments in our region and enforced travel restrictions to the Kimberley from Thursday night.

The Kimberley Zone, which is made up of the four local governments across the region, has campaigned for these measures to be put in place due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19.

The ruling means that non-essential travel to the Kimberley will be prohibited.

Importantly, the restrictions will not impact the functionality of the Kimberley's communities, and business continuance, as provisions have been made for the continuation of essential travel to the region to ensure the continued supply of goods and supplies.

We are still awaiting clarification on non-essential travel, and what that means.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said the correct decision had been made.

"There are at-risk people and communities across the Kimberley that we have a responsibility to safeguard during this uncertain period," he said.

"It is fantastic that the Kimberley's four local governments have collaborated and worked together to achieve this common-sense goal.

"I would like to thank Premier Mark McGowan and the State Government for heeding our advice and working quickly to impose these essential travel restrictions."
