The Shire of Broome called a Special Meeting of Council to take place on December 21.

All eight Councillors participated, with a number of time-sensitive items brought forward by officers before the January 2022 recess.

Coastal Protection measures at Cable Beach were once again considered, with a Council resolution made to discontinue exploring the potential use of exposed geotextile sand containers and additional exploration into a buried seawall as a potential option.

The chief executive officer has been charged with investigating this option, with a report and recommendation for Cable Beach foreshore protection options to be presented to Council in the future.

Council unanimously carried a resolution to amend the Tourism and Event Development Guidelines, with a funding round for appropriate organisations to be opened in the near future.

Finally, Council endorsed a motion to support the Broome Surf Life Saving Club in the redevelopment of their facility overlooking Cable Beach.

The Shire has supported the Club with $371,454 worth of funding and in-kind contributions, and has helped the Club secure a self-supporting loan to ensure the project proceeds.

Local contractor Colin Wilkinson Developments Pty Ltd has been selected as the preferred tenderer to undertake the work.
