The Shire of Broome has extended the temporary camping trial at Cable Beach car park until 7am on September 6, 2021.

In response to the amount of visitors coming to Broome and a shortage of rental properties, the Shire Council approved a temporary four-week free trial of overnight camping by travellers in self-contained caravans or recreational vehicles in Cable Beach Surf Club carpark, which commenced on July 1.

This has allowed conditional free camping in the southern section of the Cable Beach Surf Club carpark for a maximum of three nights in any 28 consecutive nights, with camping hours between 5pm and 7am.

In the first four weeks of the trial, a total of 161 self-contained vehicles took advantage of the opportunity, with the vast majority of people abiding by the rules.

The Shire has the ability to reduce or extend the trial as needed and will review the situation again close to September 6.
