Local youngsters are being asked to put their names forward to join the Youth Advisory Council, as the Shire of Broome seeks to get the stars of tomorrow more involved in the future of our town.

The Youth Advisory Council, or YAC, is an important part of the Shire of Broome Youth Plan (2021 – 2025), which guides the Shire’s involvement in youth services.

The YAC identify issues that are important to young people and provides them an opportunity to participate in the planning and delivery of local initiatives and projects for young people.

Participants gain leadership, work and life skills by working closely with other members, mentors and Shire of Broome staff.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said local youngsters had an important role to play in the social fabric of our town.

“Over recent years we have had some fantastic young people in the YAC, who have offered up great ideas and lots of energy to assist the Shire,” he said.

“Events like the Youth-Tastic Race in April are always really well attended and the YAC were the brains behind the operation in delivering these wonderful initiatives.

“I’d encourage young people that want to have a say on the issues that affect them to nominate for a place on the YAC.”

The group meets regularly and there are 10 positions available for young people aged from 14 to 24, with the only requirements being a positive attitude, commitment to attend and participate in meetings and events, and a passion for representing the interests of young people.

Nominations for the YAC will be received until August 31, 2021.
