Public Buildings

History shows that serious incidents have occurred for a variety of reasons in all types of buildings and even in open spaces where people assemble. Many incidents could have been prevented if basic precautions had been taken.

A public building is defined as a place where members of the public usually or occasionally assemble. Public buildings can be places such as pubs, function centres, recreation centres, schools, churches and events. The Shire's Environmental Health Officers are responsible for approving and then regularly assessing public buildings. Shire officers assess the following (and more):

• Maximum numbers of person allowed in the space;
• Emergency exits and locking devices;   
• Emergency lighting and proof of their regular maintenance;   
• Provision and maintenance of fire extinguishers and hose reels;   
• Emergency evacuation procedures;   
• Amenities including toilets and washing facilities  
• Provision and maintenance of public ablution facilities; and  
• Adequate ventilation of the building.
