The Broome Playground Strategy guides the planning, upgrade, and development of playgrounds across the Shire. It aims to create safe, inclusive, and fun play spaces that meet the needs of all children and families.

The Strategy is informed by a detailed audit and assessment of existing playgrounds, community consultation, and a gap analysis to identify underserved areas. Key objectives include prioritising upgrades, improving inclusivity and safety, and addressing gaps in playground distribution.

Key Goals:

  • Upgrade playgrounds in inadequate condition.

  • Add inclusive play equipment for all ages and abilities.

  • Improve amenities like seating, shade, picnic areas, and water fountains.

  • Boost safety with better lighting, visibility, and maintenance.

  • Build new playgrounds in areas that currently don’t have them.

  • Use sustainable, climate-resilient designs with natural materials and more trees.

The Strategy ensures Broome has vibrant, safe, and welcoming playgrounds that encourage play, learning, and community connection

Community involvement so far

✅ Targeted meetings - The Shire of Broome met with the Shire's Disability Access and Inclusion Plan group and a local inclusion advocate to understand how playgrounds can be more accessible and inclusive. This input helped shape the Playground Strategy.

✅ Online survey - The online survey was advertised and distributed by the Shire of Broome through the Shire’s website and social media platforms between 24th July and 20th August 2023.

✅ Public drop-in sessions - The Shire held community drop-in sessions at playgrounds and the library to hear from families and children about what they want in local play spaces. Activities included surveys and drawing exercises for kids of all ages.
