Broome’s emergency services personnel have a new state-of-the-art Bush Fire Centre to call home, with the much-needed facility officially opened over the weekend.

The $1.46 million centre was jointly funded by the Shire of Broome and Department of Fire and Emergency Services, and is based on Wattle Drive on the outskirts of town.

Previously, the Broome Bush Fire Brigade was operating from two geographically separated buildings, with vehicles and equipment housed in different locations.

The new facility will allow Broome’s specialist emergency services personnel and volunteers to keep the community safe from a dedicated hub.

Shire officers developed the scope for the project, advocated for funding and contract-managed the process during the centre’s construction.

An official opening was held on Sunday, with Minister for Emergency Services Fran Logan in attendance.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said the new facility was an impressive addition to the town’s infrastructure.

“Broome has been in need of a new Bush Fire Brigade Station for many years and it is fantastic to be able to unveil this state-of-the-art facility,” he said.

“It has perhaps taken longer than we all would have liked to get to this point, but the finished product is well worth the wait.

“Given the tropical climate in which we live, our specialist emergency services personnel and volunteers are essential to keeping our community safe.

“The new facility will provide a dedicated home for our Bush Fire Brigade and enable them to respond to emergencies in a more cohesive and effective manner.

“Facilities like this play a significant role in the positive evolution of Broome, with our town growing towards becoming a regional city.”
