The Shire of Broome is asking the community to report any instances of vandalism, after a new toilet block at the Broome Cemetery was damaged last week before its construction had even been finished.

Over recent years the Shire has acted on the community’s feedback to upgrade facilities at the Cemetery, with new internal roads and fencing installed, while communal places have also been created.

The latest upgrade is the establishment of a new ablution block, but it was damaged by vandals last week.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said the vandalism was disappointing.

“It is really frustrating that our attempts to upgrade facilities at the Cemetery are being met with setbacks due to mindless vandalism,” he said.

“Ultimately it costs our ratepayers when things like this happens as the project’s cost increases and work has to be redone.

“We have also experienced vandalism to gravestones in the past – these instances of anti-social behaviour are simply unacceptable and can be so distressing and harrowing for families who have loved ones buried at the Cemetery.

“I’d ask anyone that witnesses vandalism at the Cemetery, or anywhere else within the Shire of Broome, to provide information to the Broome Police.”
