The Shire of Broome proudly hosted an exclusive, free performance of WHALEBONE to local students, with more than 240 primary school and home-schooled students attending as part of a special school excursion at the Broome Civic Centre last Friday morning.

Crafted and performed by Jens Altheimer, WHALEBONE follows a lone worker’s quest to stop a rogue AI from erasing human stories. With humour, circus-inspired elements, imaginative contraptions and breathtaking visuals, the show invited audiences young and old to consider how technology shapes our collective memory.

Shire of Broome President Chris Mitchell said the free show reflects the Shire’s strong commitment to nurturing creativity and making arts and culture accessible to all.

“We love providing free arts experiences for school students, and WHALEBONE was a perfect example of how powerful and engaging those moments can be,” Mr Mitchell said.

“It wasn’t just entertainment - it sparked curiosity, laughter and meaningful questions about the role of technology and stories in our lives.

“That strongly aligns with our Arts and Culture Strategy Action Plan, which aims to increase engagement and accessibility while building a lifelong connection to the arts.”

The Shire’s Arts and Culture Strategy and Action Plan 2023–2028 outlines a vision for Broome to be a place where diverse arts, culture and heritage create a vibrant future for everyone.
