Turtle friendly beach driving techniques

Did you know?

• Turtles generally nest at the top of the beach just above the high tide mark.
• Vehicles damage turtle nests by compacting sand and crunching nests.
• Wheel ruts can prevent hatchlings making their way to the waters edge.
• Vehicle lights disturb and confuse hatchlings.
• Flatback turtles are the main nesting turtles on Cable Beach.
• The Flatback turtle is threatened and protected under Western Australian legislation.

Turtle-safe driving techniques

To limit the impact of vehicles on nesting turtles and hatchlings on Walmanyjun/Cable Beach:

• Drive and park vehicles only in the intertidal zone (wet sand)
• Avoid driving or parking on dry and dunes
• Do not drive on Cable Beach during turtle nesting season beach closures (fines of up to $200 apply)
• If you see a turtle, follow the Turtle Code of Conduct.
