Have your say about the future protection of our coastline!

The Shire of Broome is currently undertaking a review of the Broome Townsite Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan (CHRMAP). The Shire is being supported by a Steering Committee including the Kimberley Development Commission, Department of Planning Lands and Heritage and the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure, and the appointed consultant team led by Baird Australia.

A CHRMAP is a strategic planning document which outlines a long-term plan to address the impact of coastal hazards on our coastline. It looks at various hazard scenarios within 25-, 50- and 100-year timeframes and examines the potential impact of coastal hazards, now and in the future, under projected climate change and sea level rise.

A CHRMAP requires review and updating every 5 to 10 years to ensure the plan remains current. As most recommendations have been implemented and considering the evolving nature of coastal risks, the CHRMAP is now required to be reviewed and updated. The updated CHRMAP will be prepared in accordance with the methodology outlined in State Planning Policy 2.6 – State Coastal Planning Policy (SPP2.6).

The Shire of Broome is currently leading the review of the CHRMAP with the assistance of a team of consultants with experience in coastal hazard and risk assessment, statutory and strategic planning, and community engagement.

Where are we now?

A consultant team led by Baird Australia have been appointed to undertake the review of the CHRMAP, with opportunities for community and stakeholders to get involved in the initial stage of the project, with drop-in sessions for the community highlighted below.

Please join us and get involved – we want your insights!

The project team welcomes your input into the review of the CHRMAP. We are pleased to invite you and / or your organisation to meet with representatives of the project team and provide feedback on coastal protection and values that should be protected by the CHRMAP.  Your feedback will then be used to inform the review and subsequently allow for the consultant team to update the CHRMAP.

We strongly encourage you / your organisation to liaise with us early to ensure that the CHRMAP is a true reflection of the community and stakeholder coastal values, given the plans importance for the protection of the Broome Townsite.
