With the Kimberley border set to reopen in June and some semblance of normality to return, I wanted to reach out with a message to our wonderful community.

No-one could have predicted the COVID-19 pandemic - it has impacted each and every one of us over the last three months.

I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone in Broome that has helped minimise the virus’ impact by staying at home, social distancing and heeding health advice from the authorities.

Broome has amazing community spirit; it is one of our major strengths. It has well and truly been on show recently as we have worked together to keep our community safe.

Moving forward, we must continue to harness that togetherness and keep supporting our local businesses in these tough times.

The Shire is acutely aware of just how our businesses have been negatively impacted and I’ve been heartened by how they have used their initiative to survive.

While the forthcoming influx of tourists will provide a welcome financial boost, it is critical that we all be deliberate and considered in our efforts to buy local.

Stay safe everyone and thank you again.
