The Broome Boating Facility has been back in the news over the last week, and the Shire is keen to provide an update on the state of play with the project.

Led by the WA Department of Transport, the current proposal is to construct a safe and accessible boating facility at Entrance Point – something the Shire wholeheartedly supports.

The Shire facilitated a public consultation period last year, with 74 per cent of people surveyed in support of the current concept. Amendments were made to the initial design to take on board the community’s opinions and ensure minimal impact on our important dinosaur footprints.

The WA State Government has already pledged $36.3 million towards the project, with the remainder being sought from the Federal Government – which the Shire is currently advocating for.

WA’s primary environmental experts, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), are currently taking submissions on the project – with the opportunity to comment closing on December 1, 2021. With any major infrastructure project, the EPA investigates to ensure it is environmentally sound.

In the meantime, the Shire has remaining funds from the $1 million State Government allocation in September 2017 to use, with investigations around potential green space implementation and public art interpretation in early stages.

The Shire will keep the community updated as this important project progresses. For more information, visit www.broomeboatingfacility.com.au.
