The Shire of Broome Council has made the decision to progress with eight elected members, rather than the usual nine representatives.

Councillor Fiona West issued her resignation on October 22, 2021, with this happening after the 2021 Shire election results were finalised.

Subsequently, the Council had the option to either hold an extraordinary election in February 2022 to find a replacement, or progress without replacing Cr West.

The matter was raised at the November 2021 Ordinary Meeting of Council, and following lengthy deliberation the majority of Councillors voted to progress with eight elected members rather than holding another election.

The decision was approved by the WA Electoral Commission on December 1 2021, with the next local government elections to be held in October 2023.
