The Shire of Broome's current ward structure will remain the same, after Councillors voted not to change the make-up of representation at December's Ordinary Meeting of Council.

In line with WA State Government recommendations, Councils are being encouraged to assess their wards and jurisdictions to ensure a fair representation for residents.

The Shire of Broome currently has nine elected Councillors, split across two wards – seven representing the Broome Ward and two representing the Dampier Ward.

The review gave respondents the opportunity to state whether they would like the current system to remain the same, the Broome Ward to increase in size to take into account the region’s population distribution or to abolish the ward system entirely. The Shire was also open to other options and feedback from the community.

When the submission period closed on November 27, the Shire of Broome had received 59 submissions from members of the public.

Councillors took this feedback into account and unanimously voted to keep the current structure of seven Broome Ward representatives and two Dampier Ward elected members.
