Detailed plans for the redevelopment of the Cable Beach Foreshore are set to commence after the Shire of Broome Council appointed a preferred consultant to undertake the work.

Cable Beach is a world-class tourism attraction but lacks surrounding infrastructure and the Shire has plans to redevelop the foreshore to improve the precinct’s amenities.

The Shire’s 2021-22 Budget includes funding for the detailed design phase of the project, with Josh Byrne & Associates appointed at a Special Meeting of Council on Wednesday evening to complete this significant body of work.

Once completed, the foreshore redevelopment will include much more greenspace and community friendly areas, which will be focal hubs for events and include opportunities for local small businesses.

Other features include a new promenade, an amphitheatre upgrade, the renovation of the Broome Surf Lifesaving Club and the provision of new access options to the beach.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said after revitalising the Town Beach and Chinatown precincts in recent years, upgrading the Cable Beach foreshore was the next logical step.

“The redevelopment of Cable Beach foreshore has been on the agenda for many years and I’m delighted we are now at a stage to be able to get into the detail of what that will encompass,” he said.

“There has been extensive consultation with Nyamba Buru Yawuru, major local stakeholders and the community throughout the process of compiling a Masterplan and Business Case in recent years.

“We want to continue to bring the community along for the journey in this project and there will be plenty of other opportunities for residents and stakeholders to learn more along the way.

“Cable Beach is such a unique attraction, but the truth is that the surrounding amenities do not do our amazing natural asset justice.

“Redeveloping the Cable Beach foreshore will be a game-changer for Broome and provide another fantastic community-focused precinct that we can all be proud of.”

The appointment of a design consultant follows the Council decision in June 2021 to endorse coastal protection measures at Cable Beach.

These include sand nourishment and a container revetment - measures that will have minimal impact on the current dune system and a minimal environmental, aesthetic and cultural footprint.
