Plans for a new skatepark in Broome are rolling full speed ahead, with the exciting project to be funded by the Shire of Broome and Lotterywest.

The $1.5 million project was officially announced today as Premier Mark McGowan visited the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre.

The provision of both sporting infrastructure and youth services are a priority for the Shire, with the new skatepark to be based at the existing site on Cable Beach Road East.

Award-winning skatepark designers Convic were commissioned to design the new facility, with two rounds of public consultation undertaken last year.

Feedback from the Broome community has gone into the final design, with the project to become a reality in the 2021-22 financial year.

Shire of Broome deputy president Desiree Male said the new skatepark would be an amazing addition for Broome’s youth and sporting community.

“This project has a lot of community buy-in, with over 200 responses during our public submission period last year – with about 50 per cent coming from people aged 22 or younger,” she said.

“The Shire has invested heavily into sporting infrastructure in recent years and our facilities locally are now as good as any across regional Western Australia.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to Lotterywest and Premier McGowan for their ongoing financial support in this project and others across Broome.”
