The Shire of Broome is proud to share its plan for the future, following the adoption of the 2025- 2035 Council Plan at the December 12 Ordinary Council Meeting.

The Shire has undertaken a comprehensive review of its existing Strategic Community Plan 2021 – 2031 and Corporate Business Plan 2024 – 2028 which will now be replaced by a single streamlined Council Plan.

This follows recent reforms under the Local Government Amendment Act 2023 that removes duplication by providing a single, integrated medium-term plan (the Council Plan) that clearly communicates the local government’s commitments in response to community objectives.

The Shire commenced its strategic review in February 2024 which included an analysis of existing strategies and plans, considering the results from the 2024 scorecard survey, and hosting community workshops to better understand where we are now, where we want to be, and how to get there.

The Council Plan incorporates feedback and insights from a range of other informing strategies and plans, each developed through extensive community consultation conducted over recent years.

Additionally, the insights gained from the community scorecard survey played a pivotal role in shaping and validating the outcomes outlined in the plan.

Through the community workshops, the Shire of Broome’s current vision was reconfirmed, with 74% of participants agreeing to keep the vision and build on the four community aspirations of People, Place, Prosperity and Performance.

Shire President Chris Mitchell said he was grateful for the community’s feedback which shaped the development of the draft Council Plan 2025-2035.

“Our vision is to build a future for everyone at the Shire of Broome, and our new Council Plan will help guide us toward that goal.

“Thank you to all community members who participated in the community scorecard survey, the Plan Our Future workshops, or any other survey or consultation throughout recent years. It’s your aspirations and feedback that have a direct impact on the Council Plan.

“Together with Council, I look forward to achieving the goals set out in the Plan and celebrating the wins along the way with our community members.”

The Plan outlines 11 objectives and defines how these will be delivered through services, priority actions, and resources over the next four years (2025/26 to 2028/29) and beyond.

These outcomes, directly shaped by community feedback, are:

  • A safe community.
  • Everyone has a place to call home.
  • A healthy, active community.
  • An inclusive community that celebrates culture, equality and diversity.
  • Responsible management of natural resources.
  • Responsible growth and development with respect for Broome’s natural and built heritage.
  • Safe, well connected, affordable transport options.
  • A strong, diverse and inclusive economy where all can participate.
  • Effective leadership, advocacy and governance.
  • A well-informed and engaged community.
  • An engaged and effective workforce that strive for service and excellence.

The Council Plan will be available on the Shire of Broome website in the coming weeks.
