The Shire of Broome is delighted to have been acknowledged for its commitment to best practice processes in relation to safety in the workplace.

The Local Government Insurance Scheme (LGIS) recently awarded the Shire a Tier 3 Silver Diligence in Safety Award, following an on-site audit.

In 2016, an LGIS audit of Shire facilities such as the administration building, BRAC, library and Civic Centre returned a modest 48 per cent overall safety rating.

The same audit was undertaken in March 2020, with a marked improvement as it returned an 82 per cent safety rating.

The audit took into consideration differing elements such as management commitment, planning, consultation and reporting, hazard management, and training and supervision.

The Shire is set to be recognised with a safety certificate in September and will be acknowledged on the LGIS website.

Shire of Broome chief executive officer Sam Mastrolembo said he was very happy with the improvement in safety and the subsequent award.

“The 2016 audit results were concerning and a conscious effort has been made by the Shire’s Occupational Health and Safety committee to make mindful and deliberate everyday changes to ensure employee safety and mitigate risk,” he said.

“The Shire’s focus has shifted, with the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees and contractors now front and centre in everything we do.”
