The Shire of Broome is progressing with feasibility and monitoring work to determine the preferred site for a new waste management facility, with two potential sites being tested for selection before the end of the year.

With the current facility approaching the end of its operational life, it has become critical for Broome to establish a new Regional Resource Recovery Park (RRRP) that has the capacity to service the community’s waste needs for at least another 70 years.

The Shire has identified two potential sites for the establishment of the RRRP, which is proposed to incorporate best practice community waste facilities.

Broome councillors previously voted for officers to proceed with high-detail investigations at both sites, rather than just one.

Cultural, flora and fauna surveys have been undertaken and is now to be followed by hydrogeological and geotechnical investigations and monitoring that will be undertaken in accordance with best practice processes and guidelines. Findings from all site investigations will be used to prepare a Site Comparison Report.

Shire of Broome deputy president Desiree Male said a great deal of effort was being undertaken to safeguard the region’s future waste management needs.

“It is no secret that Broome needs a new solution in relation to waste management and site investigations have taken place over recent years – to no avail,” she said.

“Fortunately we have two suitable options now, but further detailed investigations must occur before a decision on the location of the RRRP is made.

“It is an exciting project that allows us to use best practice processes, minimise the amount of waste going to landfill and provide a Community Recycling Centre as an asset for Broome.

“The Shire will continue to provide information on the project to the community, with an engagement process with residents and stakeholders expected to take place next year.”
