The Shire of Broome is proud to announce the completion of Stage 1 of the Walmanyjun Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment, marking a major milestone in the transformation of one of Australia’s most iconic coastal destinations.
The first stage of construction has delivered a revitalised beachfront precinct south of the Surf Club, creating safer, more accessible and welcoming spaces for both locals and visitors that can now be better utilised all year round. Key upgrades include:
- Restored sand dunes to natural profiles enhancing protection of the coastline environment
- New beach access stairs and ramp in front of the Surf Club
- Welcoming entry point into Minyirr Park with interpretive signage
- A vibrant youth space featuring basketball, skate elements, and shaded seating
- A more pedestrian-friendly Surf Club car park with improved lighting
- A family friendly promenade linking the southern beachfront and northern restaurant precincts
Shire of Broome President Chris Mitchell said Stage 1 represented an exciting step forward.
“Stage 1 has laid the foundations for a world-class foreshore experience. The improved access, new public spaces and coastal protection works will benefit our community and our visitors for years to come.”
With Stage 1 complete, works are now set to commence on Stage 2 of the project in the second half of May. Backed by $26.3 million in Federal Government funding, $9 million from the State Government, and $5 million from a Lotterywest grant, Stage 2 will further transform the northern precinct from the Cable Beach House restaurant through to the amphitheatre and North of the Rocks access ramp.
Stage 2 redevelopment works include:
- Major all-year-round waterplay area
- Improved visual lines of sight locations to watch Cable Beach’s world-famous sunsets
- Coastal protection works including an exposed rock revetment to safeguard the northern foreshore
- Further sand dune rejuvenation and reprofiling to natural state to improve coastline protection
- Realigned vehicle accessible ramp to improve beach and North of Rocks access
- A new entry plaza with drop-off zone, BBQs, shade, seating
- A reimagined amphitheatre and event spaces
To facilitate necessary redevelopment works, vehicle access to North of the Rocks will be temporarily closed. During this time, Gantheaume Point will offer extra 4WD access and additional ‘vehicles permitted’ space on the beach available during the timeframe North of the Rocks access is unavailable.
Pedestrian access and camels rides at the North of the Rocks beach will remain open throughout redevelopment works via the Surf Club beach access point and walking north towards the rocks. President Mitchell said the project is about building for Broome’s future.
“The Walmanyjun Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment is more than an upgrade - it's an investment in our identity, and approximately 91% of the project is grant funded. This project supports jobs, tourism, and the liveability of our town all year round, while protecting our coastline and celebrating cultural heritage.”
