WA Police and the Shire of Broome have pledged to collaborate more closely to stamp out anti-social behaviour in Broome’s town centre.

Leading representatives from Broome Police and the Shire recently came to an overarching consensus – the current situation at Male Oval, and in areas of our town centre, is not acceptable.

The Shire of Broome Council pledged to install a $70,000 fence around the Broome Visitor Centre at the recent Ordinary Meeting of Council in response to ongoing reports of vandalism, anti-social behaviour and abuse of Visitor Centre staff.

Moving forward, WA Police and the Shire will be visible in areas where anti-social behaviour is occurring, taking advantage of the complementary powers of each agency.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said it was now time for action.

“Broome is an amazing place to live, work and visit – but high-profile instances of anti-social behaviour, shameful littering and excessive alcohol consumption by a select minority are sullying our whole town,” he said.

“I am completely fed up with the situation and it is time for stern action to be taken against those people responsible for this unacceptable behaviour.

“The results of our Community Perceptions Survey show that fears over safety are a major concern for residents – the Shire is listening; we’ve heard your message loud and clear.

“Tackling anti-social behaviour, alcohol abuse and crime is certainly a complex issue and there needs to be a multi-agency approach in the search for a solution.

“But, my message to the Broome community is that you will see a positive change in relation to this embarrassing issue very soon.”
