The rejuvenation of the Walmanyjun Cable Beach dune in front of the surf club is underway as planting efforts began this week.

The seedlings being planted were specially cultivated in the Shire’s nursery from seeds collected locally, ensuring they are adapted to the coastal conditions of the area.

This decision, to use native plants, not only provides a sustainable approach to the dune rejuvenation but promotes biodiversity and essential habitat for wildlife.

Brushing has been placed around the new seedings to assist in stabilising the dune by reducing the amount of sand movement. It also serves as a barrier for the plants while they establish.

When the bushing breaks down it will create the organic matter layer of the soil profile.

The Shire’s expert horticulture team has played a key role in growing plants that are well-suited to the natural environment.

Upwards of eight thousand plants have been grown for this section of the dune said a Shire Horticulturalist.

“We are all excited to finally see them being planted out on Cable Beach.

“We look forward to seeing how they will grow, green up the area, and help stabilise the dune.”

Shire of Broome President Chris Mitchell stated that the Shire has long been committed to preserving the natural environment of the area as part of the Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment project.

“The Shire values upskilling our employees and utilising their valuable experience in significant projects, just as we have done with Chinatown and Town Beach redevelopments.

“By involving our team in these vital projects, we ensure they continue to grow their expertise while contributing to the long-term sustainability of Broome’s natural environment.”

The recent dune reprofiling has restored the area to a more natural contour, aligning it with the shape of the existing southern dunes. This reprofiling will prevent erosion and ensure the dune can better withstand extreme weather events.
