The Shire of Broome Council has endorsed the next stage in the rejuvenation of Town Beach, with a contractor selected to construct a new 112-metre jetty at the site.

Upgrading the Town Beach precinct has been a priority for the Shire over the last 18 months, with a considerable scope of works completed to overhaul the area.

Following the construction of a rock revetment seawall, coastal footpath, groyne, grassed terrace area and youth-focused facilities, the $6 million jetty promises to be the final piece in the puzzle.

Funded in partnership by the Shire of Broome and State Government, Broome councillors approved the selection of SMC Marine Pty Ltd as the preferred contractor for the jetty construction at a Special Council Meeting on Thursday night.

Works are planned to commence on site in November 2020, with the projected completion date of mid-2021. During the works, access to the groyne and a portion of the carpark will be closed to the public, but most of the Town Beach precinct will still be accessible.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said the Town Beach area held special significance.

“The Old Broome precinct holds a special place in the history of Broome, being the location of sites of cultural significance for the Yawuru people and being where the pearling industry once thrived in Roebuck Bay,” he said.

“The Old Broome Jetty was removed in 1969 and was previously a focus of commercial and social activity.

“The new jetty was endorsed as part of the Old Broome Development Strategy in 2014, with the intent to allow people to fish from shore and provide recreational boating opportunities.

“We are very proud of the renewal of the Town Beach precinct and the new jetty will complete the $24 million overhaul of one of Broome’s most-scenic and important locations.”

The Shire will provide updates on the project as it progresses and thanks funding partners such as Royalties for Regions, the Recreational Boating Facility Scheme, Department of Transport, LotteryWest and the Department of Primary Industry and Regional Development.
